Understanding Obesity and Metabolic Health

Obesity is the most common chronic disease in the United States. According to the CDC, by 2030, 80% of adults will have overweight or obesity, with 1 in 2 adults having obesity. Obesity is a complex, progressive condition influenced by endocrinological, neurological, and behavioral factors.

Why Managing Obesity is Critical

  • 236 medical conditions, including 13 cancers, are directly caused by obesity.
  • Having obesity shortens the average lifespan by at least 8 years.
  • Losing just 5-10% of total body weight can help reverse or limit the progression of obesity-related complications.
  • Anti-obesity medication (AOM) is an effective adjunct for people with overweight (BMI 27+ with a serious health condition) or obesity (BMI 30+). However, only 2% of eligible U.S. patients receive AOM treatment.
  • Obesity has different phenotypes, and identifying them helps tailor effective treatment strategies.

How Journey Health Can Help

We recognize that there is no cure for obesity, but it can be actively managed with personalized, sustainable interventions.

Personalized Treatment Plans

We do not believe in a “one size fits all” approach. Each patient receives a customized plan based on their unique health conditions, lifestyle, and goals.

Our approach includes:

  • Individual or group appointments, allowing family and friends to support each other.
  • The 4 pillars of obesity medicine as taught by the Obesity Medicine Association:
    • Nutrition therapy
    • Physical activity
    • Behavioral modifications
    • Medication (if appropriate)
  • Advanced body composition analysis using an InBody bioimpedance scale to track muscle gain and fat loss accurately.

We also focus on education and myth debunking, emphasizing that health is not just about weight or BMI but overall metabolic balance.

Medication as a Supportive Tool

If needed, we can discuss the use of FDA-approved medications as part of a comprehensive weight management strategy.

FAQs

An InBody bioimpedance scale is a sophisticated tool that measures body composition by sending low-level electrical currents through the body. This provides data on fat mass, fat-free mass (muscle and bone), and visceral fat, a key predictor of obesity-related diseases.

For accurate results, follow these guidelines:

  • Stay hydrated but avoid overhydration.
  • Stand upright for at least 5 minutes before the test.
  • Use the restroom beforehand.
  • Avoid eating or exercising at least 3 hours before testing.
  • Remove metal objects and heavy clothing.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine 24 hours before testing.
  • Do not use lotion or ointment on your hands or feet.
  • Menstruating individuals should wait until after their cycle.
  • Individuals with a fever or illness should reschedule.
  • Pregnant women should avoid testing due to fluid fluctuations.

Journey Health does not accept health insurance at this time. However, we can provide an itemized bill for submission to your HSA/FSA for reimbursement.

No. If medication is appropriate, you do not need to demonstrate prior weight loss. Obesity is a relapsing condition, and medication can help reset the body’s biology to make lifestyle changes more sustainable.

Yes! Medication is only one tool we offer. Many patients see great success with nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral strategies alone.

Absolutely. Even after bariatric surgery, ongoing weight management support is crucial to maintaining results and overall health.

  • Compounded medications are not FDA-approved and carry risks such as contamination, incorrect dosing, and potential immune reactions.
  • FDA-approved medications go through rigorous testing to ensure safety, effectiveness, and quality.

No. Journey Health follows evidence-based guidelines and does not recommend or provide compounded anti-obesity medications due to safety concerns.

There are still options available, including generic medications, off-label FDA-approved medications, and direct-to-consumer pharmacies. We also recommend advocating for coverage through your employer’s HR department.
